Prayagraj Mahakumbh Fair |
In 2025, the Prayagraj Mahakumbh Mela will be a source of more than 2 lakh crore rupees for Uttar Pradesh. This is not just my claim, but it has been stated by UP government officials, media reports, and business analysts. In comparison, mega events like the IPL, which earned around 12,000 crore rupees in 2023-2024, are being outpaced by the estimate for this year's Mahakumbh, which is expected to generate around 2 lakh crore rupees in revenue.
What is the revenue of Mahakhumb in 2025 :
You might wonder how Prayagraj, a small city, can generate 2 lakh crore rupees when UP’s total GDP is around 24.5 lakh crore. But if this is achieved, it will be a significant boost for the state's economy. So, where will all this money come from? What will be the sources of earning? Let’s explore how the UP government will generate revenue.
About Khumbh Fair :
In India, Kumbh Melas are held at four locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain. These Melas have been celebrated for centuries. There are three types of Kumbh Melas: one that occurs every year, another called Ardh Kumbh, which takes place every 6 years, and the Mahakumbh, which happens once every 12 years. Each Kumbh has its own significance.
About The Last Mahakumbh Earnings :
The last Mahakumbh in 2013 generated nearly 12,000 crore rupees, with around 12 crore people attending. The Mela lasted for about 55 days. Similarly, in the 2019 Kumbh, 24 crore people attended, and the revenue generated was 1.2 lakh crore rupees. Around 6 lakh people got employment during that time.

This year, it is estimated that more than 40 crore pilgrims and tourists will visit the Mela, and the expected earnings could even surpass previous records. Imagine a district with a population of just 18 to 20 lakh being home to more than 40 crore people for the event. This will result in a very dense population. To manage this, the UP government is spending 7,000 crore rupees this year, compared to 4,000 crore in 2019.
Mahakhumbh Budget :
If we look back, 142 years ago, in 1882, the budget for the Mela was just 20,000 rupees, and only about 8 lakh people attended the event. The population of India back then was around 22 crore.
In comparison, during the 1894 Mela, 10 lakh people attended, and the total expenditure was around 69,427 rupees (around 10.5 crore rupees in today's value). In 1906, the Kumbh saw 25 lakh participants with a budget of around 90,000 rupees (around 13.5 crore rupees today). Similarly, in 1918, about 30 lakh people attended the Mahakumbh, and the administration allocated about 1.37 lakh rupees (roughly 16.44 crore rupees in today's value).
Clearly, India has changed a lot over these 142 years.
Where did the UP Government Spend 7000 Crore rupees
The government has spent money on various purposes such as infrastructure development (roads, bridges, temporary accommodation), security arrangements (police, medical teams, surveillance), sanitation, transportation, and logistical needs, as well as advanced technologies like real-time monitoring, water drones, etc., for managing the huge crowds.
Area in Mahakhumbh
1.In 2023, the area designated for the Mahakumbh was 3,000 hectares, which has been increased to 4,000 hectares this year to accommodate more visitors. To handle transportation, the number of buses has been increased from 500 to 1,000, and more than 100 special trains will operate.
Bridges
In 2024, around 10 new bridges were constructed, and for the 2025 Mela, 20 modern and large bridges have been built, especially around the Sangam area to ease movement. Additionally, the number of toilets has been increased from 400,000 in 2024 to more than 500,000 in 2025. The power infrastructure has also been expanded with about 7,000 new electricity poles being set up.
Water Supply
Water supply has also been scaled up; 15 lakh gallons per day were provided in 2024, and in 2025, it will be around 25 lakh gallons daily. The government is also promoting digital infrastructure, including smart route management, digital ticketing, and real-time updates for pilgrims via mobile apps.
Security
For security, over 50,000 CCTV cameras will be installed, and drones will be used for surveillance. In terms of personnel, while 40,000 police officers were deployed in 2024, more than 50,000 will be on duty for the 2025 event. New control rooms and security posts are being set up to handle the vast crowd.
Employees
The event will also create a significant number of jobs. In 2019, around 6 lakh people were employed during the Mela, and this year, the number is expected to rise to around 8 lakh. These jobs will be in sectors like security, health, sanitation, transportation, construction, and more.
How will Mahakhumbh generate revenue
Given the massive scale of investment, the government is also set to earn through various channels. With 40 crore visitors expected, each person will spend money on food, accommodation, transportation, and local goods. If we assume that each person spends around 1,500 rupees for lodging, food, and travel, over 45 days, this figure can easily exceed 2 lakh crore rupees. Even though not all 40 crore people will be at the Mela every day, the revenue will still be significant. The government will also generate income from media and broadcasting rights, as well as commercial partnerships.
Additionally, local businesses, small shopkeepers, and service providers will see a surge in their income. The more people attend, the greater the earnings.
Clearly, this will be a major economic boost for Uttar Pradesh.
