Did America have a hand in the overthrow of Bangladesh?
Dhaka: A coup took place in Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina left her chair and fled to India. Bangladesh has a new leader, Mohammad Yunus. However, the lingering question is whether America played a role in this change. Did American influence contribute to Sheikh Hasina losing her position? Was the U.S. involved in the political turmoil in Bangladesh? America has now clarified its stance on these matters. It has denied any allegations of interference in Bangladesh's internal affairs. Due to the violence in the country, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was compelled to resign and leave the nation.
America had rejected the allegations:
Sheikh Hasina herself had also accused America of removing her from power. But at that time America had completely rejected these allegations. However, when Mohammad Yunus took over the power of Bangladesh, people's suspicion towards America deepened. Because Mohammad Yunus is considered special to America.
Expert believes:
This is the failure of their government, the people were fed up with the wrong policies of the government, they were upset from within.
There was so much anger that within just 3-4 days people burst out, neither the police, nor the administration, nor the army had any control, if they had shown power, civil war could have broken out, then there would have been more loss of people and property.
Therefore, public anger was calmed by resignation and expulsion of Sheikh Hasina and gradually the situation was now controlled.
How much loss did India suffer from the coup:
In such a situation, a big question is whether this crisis in Bangladesh will be harmful for the Indian economy or can it be of some benefit?
India and Bangladesh are known as the strongest allies in the entire South Asia. In the last 10 years, relations between the two countries have reached new heights. In the financial year 2023-24, the bilateral trade between the two was about 13 billion dollars. In such a situation, it is inevitable that the coup in Bangladesh will have an impact on business.
How much difference will it make to the business of both?
India had invited Bangladesh as an observer country in the G20 summit last year. After this, talks were started between the two in October 2023 regarding a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). According to the World Bank, both the countries would have benefited from this FTA. With this, Bangladesh's exports to India would increase by 297%, while India's FTA would also increase by 172%. However, what will be the outline of this agreement under the new circumstances, it will be known only in the future. If we talk about India's import and export, then the biggest blow may be to India's cotton business and its export. India exports about $2.4 billion worth of cotton to Bangladesh every year. According to Commerce Ministry data, out of the total cotton exports by India in the financial year 2012-13, only 16.8% was to Bangladesh. By the financial year 2023-24, Bangladesh's share will increase to 34.9%.
Apart from cotton, India supplies fuel to Bangladesh. It holds the second largest share in India's exports to Bangladesh. Apart from this, Indian companies have a big presence in the Bangladesh market. Adani Group company Adani Wilmar is the owner of Bangladesh's largest cooking oil brand. Indian auto companies also export there on a large scale.
